Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: Do I need to be a member of the American Wine Society to Join the program?

Answer: Yes... the recommended time of membership is 2 years (to ensure proper judging experience).

Question 2: Do you offer any portion of the program during the year (outside of the conference)?

Answer: Yes, We hosted a Year 1 class on March 8, 2014 in Lovettsville, VA. No other classes are scheduled before the Oct. 30 class at conference

Question 3: How do I obtain more information about the specifics of entering the program?

Answer: Contact the Coordinator via email. Please provide a number to reach you with preferred time to call.

Question 4: Are there any entrance requirements?

Answer: Yes: you must be a current member of the American Wine Society with appropriate judging experience. You must also complete an entrance exam to demonstrate you have a working knowledge of wines and wine judging.

Question 5: How long is the Program?

Answer: This depends upon the experience level of the participant. Normal matriculation is 3-4 years. However, with extensive judging experience and a working knowledge of the reading materials and wine varietals it is possible to shorten the time to completion. Please contact the coordinator for more info.

Question 6: What is the Cost of the Program? Are there any limits to the numbers of Participants?

Answer: Currently the costs of the individual parts are:

  • Year 1 March 8 in Lovettsville, VA: $250
  • Year 1 Oct. 30 (Held at the National Conference): $150.00 Limited to 18 Students. Extensive readings and "Palate Mapping" exercises strongly recommended.
  • Year 2 Oct. 30 (Held at the National Conference): $150.00 Limited to 18 Students. Extensive readings and successful completion of Year 1 written and tasting exam
  • Year 3 Oct. 30 (Held at the National Conference): $150.00 Limited to 18 Students. Extensive readings and successful completion of Year's 1 & 2
  • Program Exam Oct. 31 (Held at the National Conference): $50.00 Limited to 18 Students.

Question 7: How long will it take to prepare to enter year 1?

Answer: Depends upon the individual. The longer you have to study the better prepared you will be... it is NOT recommended to take Year 1 unless you have completed the readings and palate mapping.

Question 8: I'm excited to get started... How do I proceed?

Answer: Excellent! Please email the coordinator with your interest in beginning the program. He will contact you with the proper course materials and entrance exam. Once the exam is graded (and you have received a passing grade) you will be confirmed for the class or placed on a WAITING LIST. We understand that the commitment is a challenge and takes a while to "wrap your head" around. Especially since the training happens at the National Conference. We can ONLY provide space for the first 18 PAID participants. Preferential treatment is given to students who have already taken Year 1 (but did not pass).

Question 9: Do you have any advice for improving the chances I will pass Year 1?

Answer: Depends upon the individual. Read, Read Read! TASTE, TASTE and TASTE! Judge whenever you can. If possible find a mentor in your area who has graduated. If there is no one in your area... we will point you towards our On-Line Study Group.
